O Great Pumpkin Beer Tasting at Liquor Barns, October 8, 9, 2010 
 
Liquor Barns will be sampling five Pumpkin beers on Friday, October 8 from 5 to 7 pm, and Saturday, October 9 from 3 to 6 pm.  Pumpkin beers are ales brewed with pumpkin during the mash, kettle (boil), primary or secondary fermentation. The pumpkin flavor is fairly subtle yet distinct, and are also usually spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and brown sugar.
 
The five pumpkin beer samples will feature Dogfish Head Punkin Ale, Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale, O’Fallon Pumpkin Ale, Schlafly Pumpkin Ale, and New Holland Ichabod brews for 50 cents each or all five for $2. Scroll down to see our tasting notes on all five of these tasty pumpkin brews!

October 8, 9 Pumpkin Beers Tasting Notes:
 
Dogfish Head Punkin Ale A full-bodied brown ale brewed with pumpkin, brown sugar, nutmeg and spices.  An excellent pumpkin ale with a nice caramel and malty flavor.  Brewed in Milton, DE.  7% abv. 
 
Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale  A light bodied pumpkin ale with an aroma of pumpkin pie.  Nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and spices make up a majority of the flavor profile.  Brewed in Hayward, CA.  4.9% abv. 
 
O’Fallon Pumpkin Ale A liquid slice of pumpkin pie!  Brewed with 120 pounds of pumpkins per batch then seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.  Brewed in O’Fallon, MO.  5.6% abv. 
 
Schlafly Pumpkin Ale A full-bodied amber beer brewed with pumpkin, butternut squash and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove giving a fresh fall flavors of pumpkin pie.  Brewed in St. Louis, MO.  8% abv. 
 
New Holland Ichabod A Pumpkin Ale brewed with malted barley and real pumpkin.  Spices such as nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, brown sugar, and a faint flavor of pumpkin pie make this a nice autumn ale.  Brewed in Holland, MI.  5.5% abv.

We’ll be sampling five craft and imported Lagers at the Barns today, Friday and Saturday for just 50 cents each, or buy a try of all five for just two bucks!  Did you know…Lagers have a bottom-fermenting yeast and are stored (or Lagered) at cooler temperatures (40-50 degrees F) during fermentation. Now you do!  

Flying Dog Old Scratch Amber Lager is brewed and fermented at medium temperatures to produce both ale and lager characteristics.  A medium-bodied Amber with a nice aroma and flavor of caramel malts.  A dry and clean finish in balanced by a mild, citrus hop flavor.  Brewed in Frederick, MD.  5.3% abv.  

Hofbräu Dunkel has a medium copper color with an off-white head.  The flavor is semi-sweet toasted/lightly roasted malt with a subtle floral hop bitterness that still allows the malt show through.  Brewed in Munich, Germany.  5.5% abv.

Xingu Pronounced shin-goo.’  A medium-bodied Schwarzbier style beer with flavors of roasted malts, milk chocolate, and caramel.  A creamy texture and a sweet mouthfeel is finished with a subtle hop bitterness.  Good carbonation and easy to drink.  4.7% abv.  Brewed in Brazil.

Schlafly Summer Lager is a Munich Style Helles.  Appearance is very pale yellow with a white head.  The aroma is light malt with just a slight floral hop character.  The flavor is semi-dry light malt with a subtle floral hop bitterness in the finish.  Brewed in St. Louis, MO.  4.5% abv.

Okocim is a Pale Lager with a semi-sweet malt base.  Flavors of caramel and toasted grains are balanced by a crisp and refreshing hop character.  Brewed in Poland. 5% abv.
