It’s Ed Wood Day!

October 10, 2013

Some of my favorite things happened today.

George Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess” opened on Broadway today in 1935. “One of these mornin’s, you’re gonna rise up singin’. You’re gonna spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky.” I’ll celebrate that.

And if we’re going to the opera, we could wear a tux! The tuxedo dinner jacket made its American debut at the Autumn Ball in Tuxedo Park, New York today in 1886. I love to wear a tuxedo. If creation had taken just one more day, I believe we’d all be born in tuxes.

Two of my favorite songwriters were born today; Johnny Green (1908) and John Prine (1946). Mr. Green gave us “Body and Soul”, “I Cover the Waterfront” and “Easy Come, Easy Go”. Mr. Prine gave us “Muhlenberg County” and a gazillion (I counted) other songs that resonate perfectly with my generation and its geography.

Should an angel happen to drift to Earth and happen to decide to play the piano, I suspect the angel would play like Thelonius Monk. Mr. Monk was born today in 1917. We’ll ask Mr. Monk for our quote of the day; “I don’t know what other people are doing – I just know about me.”

Edward D. Wood, Jr. was born today in 1924. Screen director/writer/actor par execrable, Mr. Wood gave us such timeless classics as PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, GLEN OR GLENDA?, and DEVIL’S NIGHT ORGY. Inexplicably, none of these have yet been made into Broadway musicals. Go figure. He also launched the film careers of the Tor Johnson and the Amazing Keskin. Thanks, Mr. Wood…I think.

I’m returning to our trusty tuxedo for today’s libation.

Plan 9 From Saturday Night Fever!

October 19, 2012

Diplomacy, disco, and…uh…don’t look too closely

–          The first discotheque opened today in 1959. John Travolta became instantly possible. Sing! “Stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive!”

–          Today in 1873, the Universities of Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Rutgers drafted the first code of American football rules. I understand the Southeastern Conference broke five of those rules about fifteen minutes later.

–          Today in 1866, at Hotel Europa, Austria handed Veneto over to France, which handed it immediately over to Italy (plus, probably, a player to be named later). What would the closing costs be on a transaction like this?

Some birthdays not to be missed;

–          Today is the birthday in 1945 of actor John Lithgow.

–          Halloween’s a comin’! I highly recommend the ghost stories of Russell Kirk who was born today in 1918.

–          Kentucky’s own Cassius Clay (not the boxer, the politician) was born today in 1810.

Drink 4cast 4 2day

Today is also the birthday (in 1903) of professional wrestler and actor Tor Johnson. Who can forget Mr. Johnson’s sensitive portrayal of the scientist in The Beast of Yucca Flats or his deathless and breathless performance (his character rose from the grave and thus, didn’t breathe) in the classic Plan 9 From Outer Space? Had I been in charge of the Oscars in the 1950’s, I would have suggested updating the shape of the award to reflect Mr. Johnson’s physique. Put THAT on your mantle as you sip your;

Tor’s Hammer Cocktail

3 oz. Orange Juice

1 oz. Hancock’s Bourbon

2 dashes Angostura Bitters

1 oz. Lemon Juice

½ oz Simple Syrup

1 Maraschino Cherry

Fill a shaker with ice cubes

Add all ingredients

Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass

Garnish with maraschino cherry.

Arrggghhhh!

Cheers!

The Newest Bourbon on the Planet!

October 19, 2011

Town Branch Bourbon is being released today!

I guess that qualifies as the newest bourbon on the planet! We’ve been looking forward to this for a while. It looks spectacular and I’m told the taste profile is impressive. I’ll be trying it tonight and I’ll let you know.

It’s a big day for athletes and dancers.
