The Voice That Is!

Belonged to Johnny Hartman

If you were stranded on a desert island, what would be the one wine/food/book/movie/cd you would take with you? The male singer I would choose to listen to exclusively on my desert island would be Johnny Hartman. One of Mr. Hartman’s albums was titled “The Voice That Is”. Well, it certainly was! Mr. Hartman was born today in 1923.

It’s a big day for writers.

Franz Kafka (1883) and the very interesting Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860) were born today. Ms. Gilman gave us the troubling short novel; THE YELLOW WALLPAPER. It resonates as a horror tale, an early feminist statement, and as a condemnation of the 19th-century treatment of the supposedly mentally challenged. Troubling yes, but once begun, you cannot put it down.

Mighty things happened today!

–          The film BACK TO THE FUTURE was released in 1985.

–          The Allman Brothers burst on the scene with their appearance at the Atlanta Pop Festival today in 1970. Yes, I was there and what I remember most is that it was hot…very hot…so epically hot.

Quote(s) of the day

Another of my favorite writers, playwright Tom Stoppard, was born today in 1937. Mr. Stoppard has given us brilliant plays such as; ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, ARCADIA, THE REAL THING, and THE REAL INSPECTOR HOUND. Mr. Stoppard is exquisitely quotable;

–          “We’re actors. We’re the opposite of people.”

–          “I think age is a very high price to pay for maturity.”

–          “It is not hard to understand modern art. If it hangs on the wall it’s a painting, and if you can walk around it, it’s a sculpture.”

–          “Eternity’s a terrible thought. I mean, where’s it all going to end?”

Drink 4cast 4 2day

I’m all fired up about Independence Day tomorrow! I thought we could get a jump on the holiday. Today happens to be Independence Day in Minsk, Belarus. Most of aren’t there physically (shout out if you are), but we can still have a;

Skinny Minsk Cocktail

1 oz. Denaka Vodka

1 oz White Tea

1 oz. Lime Juice

1 oz. Sugar-Free Ginger Ale

2 oz. Sugar-Free Liquid Lightning

Shake the ingredients with ice.

Pour in a highball glass and garnish with a mint sprig and lime slice.

Did I mention it was hot in 1970?

Cheers!
