The Devil’s Dictionary!

Bitter Bierce Birthday!

Today in 1842, the author of THE DEVIL’S DICTIONARY, Ambrose Bierce was born. Mr. Bierce had perhaps the wisest and most sarcastic wit America has ever seen… At least until Dorothy Parker came along. One example; “Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret.” He once defined “painting” as; “the art of protecting flat surfaces from the weather, and exposing them to the critics.”

Tennis anyone? …Anyone??

Two years ago today, John Isner of the United States finally defeated Nicolas Mahut for France at Wimbledon in the longest ever professional match: eleven hours, five minutes over three days. Isner won the fifth set 70-68. I think that’s more tennis than I’ve played in my life!

I can’t wait till the four-disc DVD is released. I’ll put it on the shelf next to the DVD of paint drying.

Cowboy stuff!

Today in 1949, the first television western, “Hopalong Cassidy” starring William Boyd was aired on NBC.

Drink 4cast 4 2day

My arm hurts just thinking about playing tennis for eleven hours. Luckily, there’s a remedy.

Tennis Elbow Punch

4 cups chilled Pineapple Juice

3 cups chilled Apricot Nectar

2 cups chilled Grapefruit Juice

1 1/3 cups Royal James Gin

1 cup chilled Polar Tonic Water

Ice Cubes

Pineapple Spears

Stir first three ingredients in a large pitcher to blend (can be prepared a day in advance – cover and refrigerate)

Add gin and tonic water.

Stir to blend.

Fill eight tall glasses with ice.

Pour drink over.

Garnish with pineapple spears and serve.
