Safety Pins & Sherlock!

You just don’t think about something like this being “invented”.

But it was. Today in 1825, Walter Hunt patented the safety pin.

Sherlock!

Basil Rathbone was born today in 1892. While I loved him in the film “The Adventures of Robin Hood”, my favorite of his portrayals is his “Sherlock Holmes” in about a dozen films in the 1940’s. I’m just now catching up on the new Sherlock on “Masterpiece Theatre” and I’m finding it as wonderful as my friends have said. I’m also a big fan of Jeremy Brett’s take on “the world’s only consulting detective”. But Mr. Rathbone was my first Holmes and for that reason alone, my favorite.

Another great detective will inspire today’s refreshment.

Mystery writer Dorothy L. Sayers was born today in 1893. Ms. Sayers gave us the delightful sleuth, Lord Peter Wimsey. In the book HAVE HIS CARCASE, Lord Peter orders a White Lady Cocktail. Let’s join him, shall we?

White Lady Cocktail

2 oz. Royal James Gin

½ oz. Cointreau Liqueur

½ oz. Lemon Juice

1 Egg White

Shake well with crushed ice.

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Elementary!

Cheers!
