Pips, Pants, & Proud Mary!

Today in 1923 the Attorney General said it was legal for women to wear trousers anywhere. Before that, I suppose they could only wear them in the family.

The Empress of Soul, Gladys Knight was born today in 1944. Ms. Knight made my life better with her recordings of “Heard It Through the Grapevine”, “Midnight Train to Georgia”, and “Neither One of Us”.

Several other birthdays caught my eye;

–          John Fogarty of the Creedence Clearwater Revival was born today in 1945. Mr. Fogarty rocked us with “Proud Mary” and “Born on the Bayou”.

–          Kansas City bandleader Andy Kirk was born today in 1898. One of his “12 Clouds of Joy” was a just-starting-out pianist; Mary Lou Williams. That tells you how fine the band was.

–          Writer G. K. Chesterton was born today in 1874. One of my favorite Chesterton quotes; “I believe in getting into hot water; it keeps you clean.”

–          James Bond creator, Ian Fleming was born this day in 1908. I suppose we should make the cocktail for today something “shaken, not stirred”.

Drink 4cast 4 2day

No. I think not. Something else has caught my fancy.

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco was officially opened today in 1937 and it’s still standing as of this morning. We can make useful and wondrous things when we put our mind to it. This recipe sounded fairly useful and wondrous.

Golden Gate Cocktail

1 ½ oz. Royal James Gin

1 ½ oz. Ron Diaz Rum

1 splash Overproof Rum

1 oz. Crème de Cacao White

1 oz. Falernum

1 oz. Lemon Juice

1 peel Orange

Fill a shaker with ice cubes.

Add all ingredients except orange peel.

Shake and strain into a chilled rocks glass filled with ice cubes.

Garnish with the orange peel.

Sing! “But I never saw the good side of a city till I hitched a ride on a river boat queen.”
