The Octopus of Paris!

It’s International No Diet Day

No kidding. No Diet. I don’t know exactly what a day like that might entail but knock yourself out!

It’s mighty day for baseball.

–          Willie Mays was born today in 1931. Mr. Mays was perhaps the finest baseball player ever. He’s certainly the best  I ever saw.

–          Another contender for that sobriquet would be Babe Ruth, but I never saw him play. Today in 1915 Mr. Ruth hit his first Major League home run. Ironically, it was against the New York Yankees. He was a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox at the time.

A number of interesting birthdays today;

–          Kentucky’s favorite actor, George Clooney, was born today in 1961.

–          Gaston Leroux was born today in 1868. Mr. Leroux wrote a bunch of melodramatic novels including THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I’ll mention another of his titles; THE OCTOPUS OF PARIS, just because it’s fun to drop a title like that into any conversation. It just lifts the level of the discussion to sublime.

–          The Phantom could have perhaps benefitted from a session or two with Sigmund Freud. Dr. Freud was born today in 1856.

–          One of very greatest films ever made was “Citizen Kane”. It was directed by Orson Welles. Mr. Welles was born today in 1915. Go on! You know you’re dyin’ to say it! “Ro-o-sebud”.

–          Singers Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Bob Seger were both born today in 1945. Sing! “My mind has a mind of its own…”

Drink 4cast 4 2day

Another literary hero will inspire our day’s libation. Today in 1940, John Steinbeck was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his novel; THE GRAPES OF WRATH. I’m sure this award gave him much consolation for not having written THE OCTOPUS OF PARIS.

Grapes of Wrath Cocktail

3 oz. Blue Curacao

1 oz. Grays Peak Vodka

2 oz. Cranberry Juice

2 oz. Grape Juice

1 oz. Cola

1 splash Pineapple Juice

Fill collins glass with ice.

Pour blue curacao and vodka into the glass.

Fill ¾ of the glass with ½ cranberry juice and ½ grape juice

Fill the rest of the glass with cola.

Add the pineapple juice to the top and shake thoroughly.

Now, look grim and whisper; “I’ll be there, Ma.”

Cheers!
