It’s Not Just Derby Day!

It’s also;

–          Bird Day in the United States; salute your fellow drivers! Wait…it’s not that kind of bird? Never mind.

–          It’s also International Firefighters’ Day. Be kind to the firefighters in your life.

There are interesting birthdays today;

–          Alice Liddell was born today in 1852. Ms. Liddell was an English schoolgirl and the model for Alice in Wonderland. Oh frabjous day!

–          Actress Audrey Hepburn was born today in 1929, as was stratospheric trumpet player Maynard Ferguson in 1928.

–          In the category of “you just don’t picture those things being invented by someone”, today is the birthday of Bartolomeo Cristofori. Mr. Cristofori was a maker of harpsichords and is credited with inventing the piano.

Drink 4cast 4 2day

Well it is Derby Day and we shouldn’t let that pass without a;

Mint Julep

2 oz. Hancock Bourbon

2 tsp. Sugar

About 20 Mint Leaves

Plenty of Crushed Ice

Put the mint leaves and sugar in the bottom of a mint julep cup or an old-fashioned glass.

Muddle leaves and sugar until the sugar dissolves.

Add bourbon and stir.

Fill the glass with crushed ice and stir again until an icy frost develops on the outside of the glass.

Garnish with mint and serve immediately.

But there’s something else to celebrate!

Today in 1904, Charles Stewart Rolls met Frederick Henry Royce at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, England. Look what that happy meeting produced!

Rolls-Royce Cocktail

1 ½ oz. Royal James Gin

½ oz. Sweet Vermouth

½ oz. Dry Vermouth

1 tsp. Benedictine Liqueur

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass with ice cubes.

Stir well, strain into a cocktail glass, and serve.

Don’t drink one while driving one!

May the 4th be with you. I wish I’d thought of that!
