It’s Howdy Doody Time!

I confess.

I always wanted to be in the Peanut Gallery.

Today in 1947, Howdy Doody debuted on NBC. Howdy was a puppet that looked like Andy Hardy had gotten stoned and gone to a dude ranch to shop. His best friend was Buffalo Bob, the host of the children’s show. Years later when I was watching Uncle Bob Shreve host dreadful late night movies on Cincinnati television, it crossed my mind that Uncle Bob might be Buffalo Bob all grown up and in a witness protection program with a killer beer cooler. It turned out not to be so. I moved on to other conspiracy theories.

There are two birthdays today that caught my eye.

Marlene Dietrich was born today in 1901. Ms. Dietrich’s career was mesmerizing from The Blue Angel through Judgment at Nuremburg. The camera loved her and I probably did too.

Today is also the birthday of the wonderful character actor Sydney Greenstreet. As with Elisha Cook Jr. (see yesterday’s blog), Mr. Greenstreet was totally delightful in The Maltese Falcon, wherein we get to hear him as Casper Gutman state with gusto; “I don’t mind telling you that I like talking to a man who likes to talk!” You just knew Humphrey Bogart was in dangerous waters. Bogart and Greenstreet teamed up in another great flick; Casablanca. Mr. Greenstreet (looking quite natty in a fez) played the owner of The Green Parrot, a bar that competed with Bogart’s bar (Rick’s Café Americaine) for business and the services of Sam the piano player. Let’s toast the birth of Mr. Greenstreet with a;

Green Parrot Cocktail

1 oz. Grays Peak Vodka

1 oz. Ron Diaz Rum

1 tsp. Ron Diaz Coconut Rum

2 tsp. Dry Vermouth

2 tsp. Blue Curacao

2 tsp. Crème de Cacao

1 splash Orange Juice

Shake all ingredients well with ice.

Strain into a chilled highball glass.

Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Mr. Greenstreet from Casablanca; “Let me give you a bit of advice, though I don’t know why as it cannot profit me in any way…”

Cheers!
