Here He Comes to Save the Day!

“That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way!”

–          That was first heard today in 1955 when The Mighty Mouse Playhouse premiered on television. I thought ol’ MM was pretty cool.

–          Perhaps in those original TV audiences there were young members of what later became the Grateful Dead (though I don’t recall the Dead ever recording Mighty Mouse’s theme song). On this date, ten years later in 1965, the Grateful Dead played their first concert at Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco.

–          The first traffic lights were installed today in 1868. They were installed outside the Palace of Westminster in London. They resembled railway signals, with semaphore arms and were illuminated at night by red and green gas lamps. So…yer tellin’ me that we had traffic lights before we had cars and before we had electric lights. Prophetic? Dumb luck? Alien influences?

–          The first Nobel Prizes were awarded today in 1901. I didn’t get one.

–          It’s a big day for two of my favorite books. Mark Twain’s THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN was published today in 1884 and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the first in the three-film adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy trilogy premiered today in 2001. “One ring to rule them all and in the darkness bind them!”

We have birthdays of interest today.

–          The “Belle of Amherst”, poet Emily Dickinson was born today in 1830.

–          As was composer Cesar Franck in 1822.

–          Actors Dorothy Lamour (1914), Kenneth Branagh (1960), and Dan Blocker (1928) were all born today. Mr. Blocker’s pixie-ish portrayal of “Hoss Cartwright” in “Bonanza” was inspiring to a generation of would-be cowboys.

A quick and incoherent sports round-up

Today in 1995;

–          Michael Slater scored 219 vs. Sri Lanka at the WACA

–          Muralitheran takes 2-224 in Australian innings of 5-617

–          Ricky Ponting makes 96 on Test Cricket debut (Australia vs. Sri Lanka, WACA)

I don’t know what any of that means, but all-in-all, a tough day for Sri Lanka. WACA??

Drink 4cast 4 2day

Only one way to go here;

Mighty Mouse Cocktail

¾ oz. Cinnamon Schnapps

¾ oz. Jagermeister

¼ oz. Grain Alcohol

Fill a 2 oz. shot with schnapps, Jagermeister, and grain alcohol in that order and shoot.

Now, go save the day yourself!
