Pop-Tarts & Pencils!

Kellogg’s Pop Tarts were created today in 1965. Nutritionists all over the planet rejoiced! Well…maybe not so much.

Today in 1895, Frederick E. Blaisdell patented the pencil. Quillmakers all over the planet rejoiced! Well…maybe not so much.

What else happened today that should incite spontaneous celebration?

To begin with, a great speech. Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address today in 1863. He wrote it the day before and we will be moved by it for another 149 years and beyond…at least I certainly plan to.

Today in 2006, Nintendo’s Wii went on sale for the first time and one year later to the day, Amazon began selling their Kindle.

Soccer legend Pele scored his 1,000th goal today in 1969. Based on the World Cup soccer matches I’ve watched on television, I figure it took him 100,000 games to do this. How does one even play that many times? I’m so impressed. Z-Z-Z-Z-Z.

It’s World Toilet Day. It really is. You can supply your own punch line.

We have birthdays that caught my eye.

–          Revolutionary War military man George Rogers Clark was born today in 1752. Obviously, he was named after a high school in Kentucky.

–          We have actors! Allison Janney (West Wing) was born today in 1959. Meg Ryan (1961), Jodie Foster (1962), and Mister Ed’s best friend Alan Young (1919) were all born today.

–          Baseball’s Ryan Howard (1979) and football’s Ahmad Rashad (1949) share this birthday.

–          A couple of real smart guys were born today; chess innovator Jose Raul Capablanca (1888) and television’s Dick Cavett (1936).

–          Bandleader Tommy Dorsey (1905) could play “Happy Birthday” for everyone.

Drink 4cast 4 2day

Two Hollywood birthdays inspire today’s cocktail recipe. The stars of Laura (one of my favorite films) were both born today; Clifton Webb (1889) and Gene Tierney (1920). Let’s toast them with a;

Luscious Laura Cocktail

2 oz. Royal James Gin

½ oz. Campari

½ oz. Passion Fruit Syrup

2 slices Pineapple

½ Passion Fruit

Fill a shaker with ice cubes.

Add all ingredients.

Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Garnish with pineapple and passion fruit.

Now sing; “She gave you very first kiss to you…”
