Talk About All the Luck!

Today in 1609, the English ship Sea Venture, en route to Virginia, was deliberately driven ashore during a storm at Bermuda to prevent its sinking. The survivors (no fools they) went on to found a new colony there. Let’s see if I’ve got this right; you start out for Virginia – you end up in Bermuda for the rest of your life. That sounds like one fine day to me!

One of my favorite songwriters was born today.

Steve Goodman (1948) gave us “You Never Even Call Me by My Name”, “Vegematic”, “Banana Republics”, “Somebody Else’s Troubles”, and perhaps the best train song ever; “City of New Orleans”. Sing. “16 cars and 16 restless riders, 3 conductors, 25 sacks of mail.”

Two Kentucky actors as well.

–          Reynaldo Rosales was born today in 1978 in Paducah. Mr. Rosales has made several appearances on television’s “The Mentalist”, “Law & Order”, and “House”.

–          Silent film star J. Warren Kerrigan appeared in about 370 films (how can that be right?), including starring roles in “Captain Blood” (1924) and “The Covered Wagon” (1923). Mr. Kerrigan was born in Louisville today in 1879.

Scintillating jazz vocalist Annie Ross was born today in 1930. Ms. Ross’s rendition of “Twisted” is amazing in a scary sorta way. We’ll celebrate her day of birth with a;

Twisted Tonic Cocktail

1oz. Absolut Citron

Polar Tonic Water

1 slice Lemon

Fill a chilled highball glass with ice cubes.

Add vodka and top up with tonic.

Garnish with the lemon.

Sing! “My analyst told me that I was right out of my head!”
