Punching the Umpire?

I can’t even imagine it.

Today in 1917, in a game against the Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox pitcher Ernie Shore retired 26 batters in a row after replacing Babe Ruth, who had been ejected for punching the umpire.

Ejected? I’m thinkin’ electrocuted!

…punching an umpire…?

One of my favorite actors was born today in 1957.

Frances McDormand has given us wonderful performances in the films; “Fargo”, “Blood Simple”, and “Lone Star”. Happy birthday Ms. McDormand! Don’t punch the ump!

We should also mention…

Paducah’s own writer/journalist Irvin S. Cobb was born today in 1876.

Bob Fosse was born today in 1927. Mr. Fosse was an actor, dancer, musical theater choreographer, stage director, screenwriter, film editor, film director, “and a manic mechanic on cars.” That last was not true…I borrowed it from Tom Waits. Mr. Fosse gave us “Cabaret”, “The Pajama Game”, “Sweet Charity”, and “All That Jazz”. I’d say he was pretty successful. Let’s celebrate his success and his natal day with a;

Jazz Cocktail

2 oz. Royal James Gin

1 oz. Crème de Cassis

½ oz. Lime Juice

Shake ingredients together with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.

Sing! “Come on boys, we’re gonna paint the town…”
