Sidekicks & Quarterbacks!

Was that a great Derby or what?

Congratulations to I’ll Take Another. I can’t wait to see the rematch at the Preakness.

Another Derby note; today in 1977 Seattle Slew won the Kentucky Derby on the way to winning the Triple Crown. Let’s hope I’ll Take Another can give the same fine effort.

It’s a big day for quarterbacks from the Bluegrass State.

University of Louisville’s Johnny Unitas (1933) and University of Kentucky’s Babe Parilli (1929) were both born today.

And a big day for the movies;

–          Gary Cooper (1901) shares this birth date with the ultimate sidekick, Gabby Hayes (1885). Mr. Hayes “consarned” and “gol-durned” his way through a gazillion cowboy flicks as the crusty and trusty sidekick to Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Wild Bill Elliott, Randolph Scott, and John Wayne. You just know that had to be a fun career.

–          Also born on this date in 1911 was director Ishiro Honda. Mr. Honda directed the Japanese Godzilla and Mothra films that inexplicably entertain me so.

Drink 4cast 4 2day

Two disturbing and fascinating women were born on this date.

British writer Angela Carter (1940) has given us THE MAGIC TOYSHOP, HONEYBUZZARD, and THE COMPANY OF WOLVES. Her writing and ideas are provocative and I could not put her books down.

Argentina’s amazing Eva Peron was also born today in 1919. We know her better as Evita. We won’t cry for her. Instead, we’ll toast her day of birth with a;

Eva Peron Cocktail

1 oz. Fernet Branca

1 oz. Sweet Vermouth

1 oz. Ginger Liqueur

1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

1 oz. Ginger Beer

Ice Cubes

Combine the Fernet Branca, vermouth, ginger liqueur and lime juice in an ice-filled shaker.

Shake well and strain into a Collins glass.

Top with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wheel.

Sing! “I kept my promise. Don’t keep your distance.”
