Good Vibes & Mr. Sulu

Lionel Hampton was born today in 1908. Mr. Hampton was one of the first vibraphone artists to play jazz. His performance with Illinois Jacquet on the classic “Flying Home” is definitive and thrilling. Good vibes indeed!

Today is also the birthday in 1937 of actor George Takei. Mr. Takei played Mr. Sulu, the helmsman of the Starship Enterprise in the original Star Trek series. Always cool…always looking ahead..always flying home.

It’s another big day for the truly meaningful sport; baseball.

–          Ted Williams made his Major League debut with the Boston Red Sox today in 1939.

–          Also in Boston, Fenway Park celebrated its first opening day today in 1912.

–          Just four years later to the day, the Chicago Cubs played their first game in Weeghman Park (now Wrigley Field). They defeated the Reds 7-6 in 11 innings. I’ve never forgiven them.
