Astros! -Nauts, -Domes, & -Pops!

First – the astronauts!

Today in 1959, NASA announced the selection of America’s first seven astronauts: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Donald Slayton.

You’ll notice the glaring omission of my eight-year-old name. Sigh…

Then – the Astrodome!

It opened today in 1965 when the first indoor baseball game was played.

Two birthdays also caught my eye today.

–          Character actor Ward Bond was born today in 1903. I grew up watching Mr. Bond leading pioneers across the country in television’s “Wagon Train”. But my favorite of his performances would have to be as Detective Tom Polhouse trying to strong-arm Humphrey Bogart’s Sam Spade in “The Maltese Falcon”.  “…you birds come in here crackin’ foxy kinda got me up on my hind legs, but now I know where I stand, it’s alright…it’s alright.”

–          Satirist/songwriter/mathematician Tom Lehrer was born today in 1928. Mr. Lehrer entertained and outraged us with such ditties as; “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park”, “The Vatican Rag”, “National Brotherhood Week”, and “Who’s Next”.
