It’s Sidekick Day!

I’m declaring it to be so.

Everybody needs a good wing man and in films everyone loves the trusty sidekick.

Two of those critters were born today.

–          Smiley Burnette (1911) pretty much made a career of being cowboy king Gene Autry’s right-hand amigo.

–          Edward Everett Horton was also born today in 1886. Mr. Horton was in about a thousand films, or at least it seems that way. My favorite is his performance in the film “The Gay Divorcee” starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Mr. Horton played a well-meaning, bumbling, aider-and-abettor of Mr. Astaire’s schemes to win the stunning Ms. Rogers. Plus, he got to dance with a very young Betty Grable. Sweet. Some might remember Mr. Horton as the narrator of “Fractured Fairy Tales” on “The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show”. If you do, keep it to yourself unless you are prepared to publically embrace your geezerdom.
