“Once in the Highlands…”

“…the highlands of Scotland…”

“…two weary hunters lost their way.”

With those words, the totally enchanting Lerner & Lowe musical, “Brigadoon” opened on Broadway today in 1947. No, I was not there. But I was once lucky enough to be one of those two weary hunters and sing some of the prettiest melodies I ever sang before or since.

There are lots of other musical birthdays today.

–          Hard bop trumpet master Terrence Blanchard was born today in 1962.

–          We can “Swing and Sway” with Sammy Kaye today! The big band man was born in 1910.

–          Today in 1939 Neil Sedaka was born. Mr. Sedaka gave us “Take Good Care of My Baby”, “Next Door to an Angel”, “Calendar Girl”, and “Breaking Up is Hard to Do”.

We’ll return (as we all should) to Brigadoon for our cocktail today.

1 oz. Dry Vermouth

1 oz. Grapefruit Juice

Mix all ingredients with cracked ice in a shaker.

Strain into a chilled old-fashioned glass.
