On the Road Day!

Jack Kerouac was born today in 1922.

Mr. Kerouac is usually credited with being the father of the Beat Generation. As such, he is a revered personage to this old hippie geezer.

Before there were hippies there were beatniks. Mr. Kerouac gave a name and a voice to this “lost generation” of the 1950’s. His ON THE ROAD mapped the new highways of communication that were literally fast new highways linking the restless youth of the United States from coast-to-coast. I see the Neal Stephenson’s of the present time doing similar work mapping the fast new cyber-cultural highways for that same youth today. Mr. Kerouac used new highways to span the country and now Neal Stephenson uses new highways to span the planet. It’s business as usual…but better…and faster…GO!

It’s a big day for singers.

Folk-rocker James Taylor (1948), jazz stylist Al Jarreau (1940), and broadway stars Liza Minnelli (1946) and Gordon MacRae (1921) all share this day of birth.

The musical “Les Miserables” opened on Broadway today in 1987.

We’ll return to Jack Kerouac for today’s concoction.

Another important book by Mr. Kerouac is THE DHARMA BUMS. By the time of its writing, the “road” energy had tempered and turned inward for its exploration and inspiration. I wonder if the same will happen with today’s beatnik/cybernik writers?

While we journey to find that answer, let’s have a;

Peach Dharma Cocktail

2/3 oz. Peach Liqueur

1 oz. Royal James Gin

1 ½ oz. Lemonade

3 Mint Leaves

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice.

Shake well.

Strain into a well-chilled martini glass.

Garnish with a lemon peel and/or mint sprig.

Go!!

Cheers!
