“A Three-Hour Tour!”

That’s what it was supposed to be!

Instead it turned into a three-year (98 episodes) tour on network television.

I remember when “Gilligan’s Island” started on TV though it pains to admit it. I don’t remember it being such a big deal. I remember thinking at the time that the show’s premise simply sounded like “Dobie-Gillis’-beatnik-friend-Maynard-Ferguson-goes-to-a-deserted-island-in-the-Pacific” ZZZZZZZZ. Who knew how popular the show would become when it went into syndication? Who could foresee the icons that “The Skipper” and his “Little Buddy” would become? More importantly, who knows why?

Actor Alan Hale Jr. played the role of “The Skipper” with gusto. Mr. Hale was born today in 1921.

A strange journey began today.

The first radio episode of Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” was transmitted on BBC-4 today in 1978.

What interesting birthdays we have this day!

–          My fondness for children’s literature will not let me miss the birthday (in 1859) of Kenneth Grahame. Mr. Grahame not only gave us the classic WIND IN THE WILLOWS, but he also gave us THE GOLDEN YEARS and DREAM DAYS. I recommend them all. You will be a quieter, happier person for having read them.

–          Another of my favorite songwriters was born today in 1947. Carol Bayer Sager gave us “A Groovy Kind of Love” (recorded originally by the Mindbenders – a song that involves the terms; “groovy” and “mindbenders” – how can that not be fine?) and “Don’t Cry Out Loud” (Melissa Manchester’s version is the best) and about a gazillion more.

–          Mississippi John Hurt was born today in 1892. How can gravel whisper? If you listen to Mr. Hurt, you won’t learn how it can whisper, but you will know that it does.

–          One of my favorite films is the 1939 epic “Gunga Din”. Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. got most of the screen time, but the title role was played by Sam Jaffe. Mr. Jaffe was born today in 1891. “You’re a better man than I am…”
