It’s Golden Girl Day!

When I think of the James Bond movie “Goldfinger”…

…I immediately hear Shirley Bassey wailing the title song like no one else can. But it was another Shirley who portrayed the character that unhappily became the golden girl pictured on all the film’s promotional material. Shirley Eaton is a tall and lovely British actor who appeared in a variety of British films of the 50’s and 60’s. She starred in other action/spy flicks and she also appeared in “Carry On Sergeant!”, one of a long series of dreadful British comedies that I love so. Without a doubt, Ms. Eaton’s appearance as the ill-fated, gold-painted victim of Auric Goldfinger will be the role of hers everyone remembers. Ms. Eaton was born today in 1937. Thus, I hereby declare today; Golden Girl Day! As Mr. Bond murmurred to Ms. Eaton; “I’m so glad.”

There are two more birthdays that caught my eye.

–          Artist John Singer Sargent was born today in 1856.

–          Folksinger Glenn Yarborough likewise in 1930.

Also,

Today in 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records in Detroit. (Sing!) “Nothin’ you can do ‘cause I’m stuck like glue to my guy.”

The television sitcom “All in the Family” premiered on CBS today in 1971.  (Sing it again!) “Guys like us, we had it made. Those were the days.”

It’s Memorial Day in Turkmenistan (Sorry, I don’t know any Memorial Day hymns or, for that matter, any Turkmenistan)

Drink 4cast 4 2day

We’ll continue our Golden Girl Day festivities with a;

Golden Girl Cocktail

1 oz. Ron Diaz Rum

½ oz Simple Syrup

1 oz. Pineapple Juice

¾ oz. Tawny Port

1/2 Egg

Shake all ingredients well with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.

Garnish with grated orange zest and serve.

(Sing one more time!) “Such a cold finger beckons you to enter his world of sin, but don’t go in!”

Cheers!

Roger
