Women? Acting? Since When??

Well, I’ll tell you!

Today in 1660, Margaret Hughes became the first actress to appear on an English public stage, playing the role of Desdemona in a production of Shakespeare’s “Othello”. A woman playing a woman…totally daring!

Also, in case you missed your chance earlier in the year, be good to your mom today. It’s Mother’s Day in Panama.

But today is all about birthdays.

–          Mary, Queen of Scots, was born today in 1542, as was Jean Ritchie, Queen of Appalachia, in 1922.

–          Composer Jean Sibelius (1865), playwright Georges Feydeau (1862), and writer James Thurber (1894) all share this birthday.

–          Sammy Davis, Jr. (1925) and the Doors’ Jim Morrison (1943) would do a bizarre rendition of “Happy Birthday” for us today.

Cartoonist E. C. Segar was born today in 1894. Mr. Segar blessed us with the cartoon strip “Thimble Theatre” in which we visited the seashore village of Sweethaven and met the Oyl Family (Castor, Olive, etc.), Bluto, Wimpy, and Alice the Goon. Oh…and another guy…Popeye, the Sailor Man.
