“It Was Rainin’ Hard in Frisco…

…I needed one more fare to make my night.”

Singer /songwriter/storyteller Harry Chapin was born today in 1942. I never tire of hearing Mr. Chapin sing his song “Taxi Driver.”

There’s lots more to celebrate today.

–          The New York Philharmonic gave its first concert today in 1842.

–          Today in 1963, “instant replay” was used for the first time in an Army-Navy game by its inventor, director Tony Verna. Do you want me run that by you again?

–          The Royal Opera House opened at Covent Garden, London today in 1732. No-o-o I was not there.

–          It’s International Civil Aviation Day. Polite pilots all over the world will rejoice!

We have other birthdays of interest.

–          Bandleader and wild man, Louis Prima (1910) and serious seersucker suit wearer Tom Waits (1949) were both born today. Nobody’s safe.

–          Basketball legend, Larry Bird (1956) and the greatest catcher in baseball, Johnny Bench (1947) share this birthday.

–          Artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598) and opera composer Pietro Mascagni (1863) were also born today.

–          As were actors Ellen Burstyn (1932) and Eli Wallach (1915).
