Doctor Who & the Jukebox!

All my actor friends…pay attention!

The culprit has been found. Today in 534 B. C., Thespis of Icaria became the first actor to portray a character on stage. I believe he actually played all the characters in the Parthenon Players’ holiday production of “Greater Tuna” that year. I can’t decipher the reviews to tell you how he did. They’re all Greek to me! (ba-dum bum!).

The first jukebox went into operation at the Palais Royale Saloon in San Francisco today in 1889. I assume the most popular selections would have been from the Stephen Foster Songbook. The Palais Royale Saloon…that just sounds like a real good time, doesn’t it?

Today in 1903, Enrico Caruso made his American debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, appearing in “Rigoletto”. I wonder if that’s on the jukebox.

The first edition of “Life” magazine was published today in 1936.

There are interesting birthdays today.

–          Appropriately, there are thespians on our birthday list today. Renaissance man Harpo Marx was born today in 1888. Mr. Marx could play both the harp and the bicycle horn with style. He could cross his eyes. He could carry a swordfish and a hot cup of coffee in his coat. He could shake hands with his knee! And he did all this without saying a word. Wotta guy! An inspiration to all young people.

–          Also, actors Boris Karloff (1887), Michael Gough (1916), and Victor Jory (1902) were all born today.

–          Pitcher Luis Tiant (1940) shares this birthday with television reporter Robin Roberts (1960).

–          Outlaw Billy the Kid was born today in 1859 as was composer Manuel de Falla in 1876.

Today in 1963, the BBC broadcast the first ever episode of “Doctor Who”. It starred William Hartnell and has gone on to become the world’s longest-running science fiction drama. Let’s toast the doc with a;

1 oz. Ashling Chocolate Liqueur

1 oz. Bailey’s Irish Mint Chocolate Cream

2 oz. Milk

Put in a blender and blend well.
