It’s Icelandic Language Day!

How do you say that in Icelandic? All of you out there who can speak Icelandic (I admit mine’s a bit rusty) – this is your day to flaunt it.

It’s also International Day for Tolerance.

Also, the musical “The Sound of Music” opened on Broadway today in 1959. Keep climbin’ every mountain!

Birthdays? Yes, we have ‘em.

–         Playwright, critic, and all-around wicked wit George S. Kaufman was born today in 1889. Reputedly, Mr. Kaufman was reviewing a play one evening and left the theatre during the intermission, went across the street to the Western Union Office (remember those?), and sent the following telegram to the lead actor in the show; “AM WATCHING THE PLAY FROM THE BACK OF THE HOUSE WISH YOU WERE HERE”. Man…that’s cold.

–         Character actor Clu Gulager (1928) shares this birthday with baseball’s Dwight Gooden (1964).

–         We could put together a rousing version of “Happy Birthday” today. Classical composer Paul Hindemith (1895) and blues composer W. C. Handy (1873) could collaborate on the arrangement. Dixieland legend Eddie Condon (1905) could play it and Diana Krall (1964) could sing it. How do you say “tres cool” in Icelandic?

Actor and wine lover Burgess Meredith was born today in 1907. Mr. Meredith, quite a serious actor, will probably be most-remembered for his surreal portrayal of Batman’s nemesis, the Penguin. We’ll let that inspire our daily libation.

Flying Penguin Cocktail

1 ½ oz. Opulent Vodka

1 ½ oz. Ron Diaz Rum

1 ½ oz. Royal James Gin

1 splash Angostura Bitters

5 oz. pink grapefruit juice

1 ½ oz. sugar syrup

Pour the vodka, rum, and gin into a highball glass over two ice cubes

Add the Angostura and stir.

Add the grapefruit juice and sugar syrup.

Slice a fresh lime into a slice approximately ½ inch wide.

Cut in half, squeezing one half directly into the drink and drop the squeezed half in the drink.

Garnish with the unsqueezed half.

That’s “Please pass the fish filet” in Icelandic (prove that it’s not!).

Over the past week Liquor Barn Springhurst has added several new beers to “Growler Heaven”:

Southern Tier Old Man Winter (7.2% abv, $5.99/$10.99 a Growler) is a Winter Warmer with a semi-sweet caramel malt base and an earthy hop bitterness.

Boulder Never Summer (5.94% abv, $4.99/$8.99 a Growler) is another Winter Warmer with a toasty caramel malt base and hints of toffee, brown sugar, and finishing with a crisp hop bitterness.

Rogue Yellow Snow (6.2% abv, $5.99/$10.99 a Growler) is a hoppy IPA with a nice floral hop character

Great Lakes Blackout Stout (9% abv, $5.99/$10.99 a Growler) is a deliciously smooth Imperial Stout.  Notes of milk chocolate and caramel nicely coat the palate with a silky smooth finish.

The two growler prices reflect our 32oz and 64oz Growler refills.

With Thanksgiving coming up next week we are going to feature some beers this weekend that I think will pair nicely with your feast:

-Flying Dog Old Scratch (paired with a Traditional Turkey Dish)

-Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale (paired with a Smoked Turkey)

-Sheltowee Gloomsucker (paired with Ham)

-Full Sail Wassail (paired with Pumpkin Pie or other Desserts)

 

In next week’s email I will provide some other choices for your Thanksgiving feast.  Beer can be paired with food just as easy as wine, if not easier!

This tasting will take place at every Liquor Barn location on Thursday and Friday 5-7pm, Saturday 3-6pm.

We have some exciting beer events happening at Liquor Barn Springhurst this week:

This Thursday November 17th from 5-7ish we will have a special tasting featuring New Albanian Brewing Company.  Roger Baylor, Dave Pierce, and Richard Atnip will be on hand to talk about the beers and brewery.  We will be featuring Hoptimus, Tunnelvision, Yakima Rye IPA, Jaxon, and Elector.  This will be a paid event in our Education Center located in at the front of the store.  For $7 you will receive a 4-5oz sample of each beer, some snacks, and learn all about our Micro brewery over the river.

On Friday November 18th from 5-7pm we are having a Growler Night with Against the Grain Brewery. We will have multiple Against the Grain beers on tap that we will be filling up in official Against the Grain growlers.  There will also be several representatives and brewers on hand to talk about their new establishment.  Don’t miss out on a great opportunity to meet the newest addition to Louisville’s Craft Beer scene.
