Where Can You Get Your Kicks?

That’s what today is all about.

Today in 1926, US Route 66 was established. From that day forward we knew where we could get our kicks; (sing it!) St. Louis; Joplin, Missouri; Oklahoma City (mighty pretty); Amarillo; Gallup, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; Barstow, Kingman, San Bernardino…

We’ll make that our Drink 4cast 4 2day.

Route 66 Cocktail

1 oz. Absinthe

1 oz. McGrath’s Irish Cream

1 oz. Kahlua

1 pinch Cinnamon

Layer Kahlua, McGrath’s and then absinthe.

Light on fire (good grief!) and then sprinkle cinnamon over the top (it will flame and sparkle, about eighteen inches in height).

Blow out and then drink through a straw.

Don’t forget Winona!

What else happened today?

–         Today in 1750, the F. H. C. Society, also known as the Flat Hat Club, was formed at Raleigh Tavern, Williamsburg, Virginia. It was the first college fraternity. Obviously, since they didn’t have Route 66 yet for a “road trip”, they had to get their kicks at the Raleigh Tavern, at least until they learned to spell “kegger”.

–         Gottfried Leibniz got his kicks today in 1675 by demonstrating integral calculus for the first time to find the area under the graph of y=f(x). O-o-o-kay. I wanna party with him!

What might today REALLY be about?

It’s Veterans Day.

I’d suggest we all find someone who has served our country in the military, take a moment to reflect with them on their experience, and thank them for their sacrifice. I’m thinkin’ maybe I shouldn’t wait till Veterans Day rolls around again to make such suggestions in the future.

We do have birthdays that caught my eye.

–         Today is the birthday of General George Smith Patton, Jr. in 1885.

–         It’s a big, big day for actors; Robert Ryan (1909), Demi Moore (1962), Calista Flockhart (1964), Pat O’Brien (1899) and Stubby Kaye (1918) were all born today.

–         Kentucky’s favorite son, golfer Fuzzy Zoeller was born today in 1951.

–         Songstress LaVern Baker (1929), comedian Jonathan Winters (1925) and writer Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (1922) all share this birthday.

Allow me to toot our horn a bit.

Liquor Barn has been named Whisky Retailer of the Year (Multiple Outlet) by Whisky Magazine. It’s good to live in the Napa Valley of bourbon.

Today’s date is 11/11/11.

All you Nigel Hufnel fans out there – crank it up to eleven!
