I Always Cry at Weddings

Today’s a big day for weddings…grab a hankie.

Abraham Lincoln married Lexington’s own Mary Todd in Springfield, Illinois today in 1842. He probably made a speech.

Today in 1825, the Erie Canal was completed with Governor DeWitt Clinton performing the “Wedding of the Waters” ceremony in New York Harbor. I understand the honeymoon was in Schenectady. Oh well…

And now for something completely different;

–         It’s Flag Day in Panama.

–         Today in 2001, the first Harry Potter movie had its world premiere in London.

There are birthdays of interest;

–         Will Rogers was born today in 1879. He said; “I never met a man I didn’t like.” You gotta like a guy like that.

–         Television newsman Walter Cronkite was born this day in 1916. “And that’s the way it is.” Trust me, it seemed profound at the time.

–         Actors Loretta Swit (1937), Art Carney (1918) and Cameron Mitchell (also 1918) share this birthday.

–         Today in 1740 saw the birth of Augustus Montague Toplady in England. Mr. Toplady (say that without smiling) wrote “”Rock of Ages”.

–         The inventor of the Barbie Doll, Ruth Handler, was born today in 1916.

Today in 1922, in Egypt, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his men found the entrance to Pharoah Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. An argument immediately ensued as to whether Pharoah Tut more resembled Christopher Lee or Boris Karloff. I should also point out that the “curse” of the mummy’s tomb appears to be for real. To my knowledge, none of the original finders of the tomb are alive today. Hmmmm… Whatever, let’s toast them all with a;

Mummy Cocktail

1 oz. Triple Sec

2 oz. Grays Peak Vodka

1 tbsp Lemon Juice

Club Soda

Build over ice in a rocks glass.

Stir well.

Don’t mess with the scarab!
