If You Go to San Francisco-o-o…

Well, Don Gaspar de Portola did. He led the first documented European visit to San Francisco Bay today in 1769. Yes, I understand he did wear flowers in his hair and left his heart there when he departed.

And that’s not all!

–         Cheerleading was invented today! Rah!! Today in 1898 Johnny Campbell of the University of Minnesota led the crowd in cheering on the football team. No pyramid though – only one guy.

–         Today in 1920, KDKA of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania started broadcasting as the first commercial radio station.

–         Penguin Books was found not guilty of obscenity in the LADY CHATTERLEY’S LOVER case today in 1960. It’s just art folks.

AND there are birthdays! Sis! Boom! Bah!!

–         Two singers who obviously couldn’t spell their first names were born today; k. d. lang (1961) and J. D. Souther (1945). Oh, and one that could; Kurt Elling (1967).

–         Actors Burt Lancaster (1913) and David Schwimmer (1966) share this birthday.

–         Baseball’s no-hit master, Johnny Vander Meer (1914) was born today, as was Captain America’s good friend Steve Ditko (1927).

Drink 4cast 4 2day

It’s Statehood Day in North and South Dakota. They both became states today in 1889. Let’s toast that with a

Dakota Cocktail

1 ½ oz. Hancock’s Bourbon

1 ½ oz. Durango Tequila

Combine in a double shot glass and enjoy.

Huzzah!

Cheers!

Roger
