Blow winds and Crack Your Cheeks!

Today’s a big day for weather and Shakespeare.

–         Today was opening day for Shakespeare’s tragedy, “Othello”. It was presented at Whitehall Palace in London today in 1604. The weather forecast? “If after every tempest come such calms, may the winds blow till they have waken’d death!” I’ll stay home that day, thank you.

–         The opening day for Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” was exactly seven years later, today in 1611. “…you have put the wild waters in this roar…” I’ll stay home that day too.

–         Today in 1870, the Weather Bureau (later imaginatively renamed the National Weather Service) made its first official meteorological forecast. That forecast? “No meteors today” Finally, it’s safe to go out.

I think this needs to be our Drink 4cast 4 2day.

Tempest in a Teapot Cocktail

2 oz. Ron Diaz Spiced Rum

2 oz. Absinthe

12 oz. Black Tea

2 tbsp Sugar

1tsp Cinnamon

Brew tea.

Stir in sugar and cinnamon.

Add rum and absinthe.

Serve hot.

“Rage! Blow! You cataracts and hurricanoes!”

Other slightly quieter things happened today.

–         The ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo, was exhibited to the public for the first time today in 1512. It made little noise.

–         Today in 1938 Seabiscuit defeated War Admiral in an upset victory during a match race dubbed “The Match of the Century” in horse racing.

–         The Strait of Magellan was discovered today in 1520 by…you guessed it…Magellan!

–         On this day in 1959, Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jacque Plante wore a protective mask for the first time in a National Hockey League game. What? Masks weren’t invented till then? You got to be ‘splainin’ why this took so long.

–         It’s World Vegen Day and it’s Independence Day in Antigua and Barbuda.

We have birthdays of interest.

–         Golf master Gary Player was born today in 1935.

–         Writer Stephen Crane (THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE) likewise in 1871.

–         It’s big day for music of many kinds. Opera gave us Victoria de los Angeles in 1923. Rocker Jim Steinman was born today in 1947. 1957 was the year for Texas troubadour Lyle Lovett and the energetic jazz man Lou Donaldson was born today in 1926.

Watch out for meteors.

Cheers!

Roger,

11/1/11.
