That Was One Great World Series!

Congratulations to both teams and thanks for the show. Now, when do the pitchers and catchers report?

While we’re waiting for spring training, we must take note that today in 1945, Jackie Robinson of the Kansas City Monarchs signed a contract for the Brooklyn Dodgers to break the baseball color barrier.

Is it March yet?

Anxious things happened today.

–         Today in 1938, Orson Welles broadcast his radio play of H. G. Wells’ THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, causing anxiety in some of the audience in the United States. When reassured it was only a play, that audience re-attached their anxiety to professional wrestling where it properly belongs.

–         The “Rumble in the Jungle” (which is even catchier than “War of the Worlds”) boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman took place in Kinshasa, Zaire today in 1974, causing anxiety in Mr. Foreman.

–         On this day in 2003, LeBron James made his NBA debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers causing anxiety in everyone who had to guard Mr. James.

There are many birthdays that caught my eye today.

–         Two singers who have nothing else in common were born today; psychedelic queen Grace Slick in 1939 and cowboy yodeler Patsy Montana in 1908.

–         Writers Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821) and Ezra Pound (1885) share this birthday…page-turners both.

–         Actors Ruth Gordon (1896) and Henry Winkler (1945) were both born today.

–         Jazz trumpet legend Clifford Brown was born today in 1930.

–         The human path to success for all 97-pound weaklings, Charles Atlas was born this day in 1893.

Drink 4cast 4 2day

I mentioned Patsy Montana before. It’s a big day for her namesake state (it was named after her…yes?). Today in 1864, Helena, Montana (the town, not Patsy’s sister) was founded after four prospectors discover gold at “Last Chance Gulch”. As a young man, I think I found myself in Last Chance Gulch several times on particularly bad days…sometimes after particularly good nights. How can I let this slip by?

Last Chance Cocktail

1 ¾ oz. Durango Gold Tequila

¼ oz. Apricot Brandy

1 oz. Lime Juice

1 tsp. Honey

Shake with a glassful of crushed ice and pour unstrained into an old-fashioned glass.

Garnish with a wedge of lime and serve.

Forget anxiety.
