Howling in Mayberry With Charlie Chan!

It’s a big day for television – set your TIVO on “Way Back”!

–         “The Andy Griffith Show” premiered on CBS this day. It was our first glimpse of Mayberry, Sheriff Andy, Deputy Fife and his bullet, Miss Helen, Opie and Aunt Bee…and Otis…and Floyd the barber… (who did I forget?).

–         Two children’s shows premiered on this day in 1955. “The Mickey Mouse Club” taught us how to spell the names of rodents; M-I-C, K-E-Y, M-O-U-S-Eeeeeee (sing it, it works I promise). Captain Kangaroo introduced us to the surreal “Mister Greenjeans”.

–         Oh yeah. Gomer and Goober.

That’s not all.

–         British Captain James Cook anchored in Alaska today in 1778. His diary entry for today; “It’s not Hawaii.”

–         It’s German Unity Day.

–         On this day in 1964, the first Buffalo Wings were made at the Anchor Bar in? …anybody? …anybody? …BUFFALO, New York.

–         The “Shot Heard Round the World”, one of the greatest moments in baseball history, happened today in 1955, when the New York Giants’ Bobby Thomson hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning off Brooklyn Dodgers’ pitcher Ralph Branca to win the National League pennant after being down 14 games. This, Mickey Mouse and Captain Kangaroo all on this day. What’s left to live for?

Many birthdays caught my eye.

–         Still thinking about baseball; Dave Winfield (1951) and Dennis Eckersley (1954) share this birthday.

–         Twistin’ Chubby Checker (1941) and blues man Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954) were born today.

–         As were writer Gore Vidal (1925) and etiquette queen Emily Post (1873).

–         Charlie Chan portrayer, Warner Oland (1879) and “Scream” queen Neve Campbell (1973) were both born today.

Allen Ginsberg’s poem “Howl” (“I saw the best minds of my generation…”) was ruled “not obscene” this day in 1957. Folks, it’s art, fear it not! Instead let’s toast it with a;

Howl at the Moon Cocktail

½ oz. Crown Royal Whiskey

½ oz. Butterscotch Schnapps

1 oz. orange juice

Pour the whiskey into a chilled shot glass and layer the schnapps on top of it.

Pour another chilled shot glass with orange juice.

Serve both and use the orange juice as the chaser.

Number One Son says it tastes like pancakes!

Cheers!

Roger,

10/3/11.
