Upside-Down TV!

Today in 1956, television was broadcast in Australia for the first time. I’m guessing the first program was Captain Kangaroo.

Of course the big thing to celebrate all over Kentucky today is the UK/UL clash on the football field. Tailgaters should a great afternoon with temperatures at kickoff in the upper 60’s. Wow!

Speaking of football, the American Professional Football Association (later renamed the National Football League) was organized in Canton, Ohio today in 1920. It was not televised.

A little piece of paper called the United States Constitution was signed in Philadelphia on this day in 1787. That’ll keep things in perspective.

Today in 1976, the first space shuttle, “Enterprise”, was unveiled by NASA. That sounds so ho-hum, but I remember that being a very exciting happening. A shuttle to space! How do score that ticket?

The television show M.A.S.H premiered today in 1972 on CBS. Wonder how it looked upside-down?

We have birthdays.

–         Sticking with our football musings, Kentucky’s own George Blanda was born today in 1927.

–         Also in sports (it is Saturday), baseball all-stars Orlando Cepeda (1937) and John Franco (1960) share this birthday.

–         Actors Dorothy Louden (1933) and Roddy McDowell (1928) were both born today.

–         Ms. Louden and/or Mr. McDowell could, I suppose have been directed by film director Edgar G. Ulmer who was born this day in 1904…but I shudder at the thought.

–         Country legend Hank Williams (that’s SENIOR) was born today in 1923. “Son of a gun, we’re gonna have big fun…”
