Cave Paintings & Monster Sightings…Oh My!

It’s wide-ranging day. Expect anything!

–         Strange occurrences, including a monster sighting, took place in Flatwoods, West Virginia today in 1952. Sounds like a typical post-football game party in my neighborhood.

–         Elizabeth Barrett eloped with Robert Browning this day in 1846. I always cry at weddings.

–         Prehistoric cave paintings were discovered in Lascaux, France today in 1940. How do you say “graffiti” in French?

–         On this day in 1910, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 premiered in Munich with a chorus of 852 singers and an orchestra of 171 players. How do you say; “Holy Moly! I wish I’d been there!” in German?

–         The television show “Lassie” made its debut on CBS in 1954. She’s tryin’ to tell us something!

It’s Defenders Day in Maryland and it’s National Day in Cape Verde. Pick ‘em.

Birthdays! We have Birthdays!

–         Journalist H. L. Mencken (1880) was born today, as was basketball giant Yao Ming (1980).

–         Olympic hero Jesse Owens was born this day in 1913.

–         Singers Maurice Chevalier (1888) and Ol’ George Jones (1931) share this birthday with one more singer.

Drink 4cast 4 2day

Maria Muldaur was born today in 1943. Ms. Muldaur is probably best known for her sultry rendition of “Midnight at the Oasis”, so we’ll toast her birthday with an;

Orange Oasis Cocktail

½ oz. Cherry Brandy

1 ½ oz. Greenall’s Gin

4 oz. Orange Juice

Ginger Ale

Shake brandy, gin and orange juice with ice and strain into a highball glass over ice cubes.

Fill with ginger ale, stir and serve.

Now, go forth and have “strange occurrences”.

Cheers,

Roger
