Smoke & Voodoo!

“We have met the enemy and they are ours.”

That’s the message sent by Oliver H. Perry today in 1813 after an American naval force defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. About a 140 years later cartoonist Walt Kelly had one of his characters paraphrase the message as; “We have met the enemy and he is us!” Unfortunately, I read “Pogo” before I read history. I cannot to this day keep these lines straight.

Also;

Today in 1955, “Gunsmoke” premiered on CBS-TV.

And…it’s National Day in Gibraltar. You know that’s gonna rock!

There are a gazillion birthdays today.

–         Today is the birthday in 1801 of New Orleans voodoo queen Marie Laveau. I understand she still operates several interesting shops in the French Quarter and still celebrates her birthdays in the most charming ways.

–         Composer Henry Purcell (1659) shares this birthday with stage singer/dancer Adele Astaire (1896). Yeah…it’s Fred’s sister.

–         It’s a big day for some of my favorite baseball stars. Roger Maris (1934), Ted Kluszewski (1924) and the best player in the game today, Joey Votto (1983) were all born today.

–         Actor Edmond O’Brien (1915) and golf legend Arnold Palmer (1929) also share this birthday.

Drink 4cast 4 2day

There’s one more birthday to mention. On this day in 1918, canine actor Rin Tin Tin was born. Thus, I give you;

Rin Tin Tin Cocktail

1 oz. Opulent Vodka

3 oz. Greenall’s Gin

1 oz. Jagermeister

2 oz. Polar Tonic Water

5 ice cubes

Put cubes in first, then vodka, gin & Jagermeister, then tonic water.

Drink slowly.

One of these is enough.

Woof!

Cheers,

Roger
