Big Books, Big States & Little Trains

Happy birthday to the movies!

Today in 1891, Thomas Edison received a patent for the motion picture camera. YouTube loomed on the horizon.

This was a very good invention for birthday boy Earl Derr Biggers (1884). Mr. Biggers’ greatest literary character was detective Charlie Chan who was chronicled in B-movies galore by a variety of actors. These films were certainly far from good and I love them all.

There’s more to celebrate today;

–         The printing of the Gutenberg Bible was completed this day in 1456. No, I was not there.

–         Today in 1875 Captain Matthew Webb became the first person to swim the English Channel.

Birthdays! We have birthdays!

–         It’s a big day for writers. Argentina’s Jorge Luis Borges shares this birthday with Kentucky’s own Chris Offutt (1958).

–         Baseball’s iron man Cal Ripken Jr. was born today in 1960.

–         Today’s also the birthday of Joshua Lionel Cowen (1880). Mr. Cowen has a warm spot in my heart for creating Lionel Trains. I loved mine…when my Dad let ME play with them!

Alaska has a big day today as well.

Today in 1912 Alaska became a United States Territory, thus inspiring our “Drink 4cast 4 2day”.
