Xicolatata Day! If I’m Elected…

The Xicolatada is a traditional festival celebrated in the village of Palau-de-Cendagne in Languedoc-Roussillon (we need to go there). It has been celebrated on August 16 for over 300 years. In Catalonia, August 15 was once a festival day and the locals would drink quite a bit (we obviously need to go there!), to the point that they felt a bit ill the following morning. To feel better, the village chocolatier (is this an elected position?) would offer them a hot chocolate, which he claimed was an excellent remedy. Over the years, this habit grew into a custom, and eventually a municipal association was formed to remember the tradition and to organize the distribution of hot chocolate every year on August 16, at precisely 11 in the morning. Wow! Campaigning to be Commissioner of Chocolate. Now, if only Juliette Binoche is involved…

That’s all I need today to celebrate…but wait! There’s more!!

Today in 1954, the first issue of Sports Illustrated was published. No, it wasn’t the swimsuit issue.

And there are birthdays;

–         T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) was born today in 1888.

–         Singers Ketty Lester (1934) and Al Hibbler (1915) share this birthday.

–         Poet Charles Bukowski (1920) was born today, as was film director James Cameron (1954).

–         It’s a big day for one-name singers. Madonna (1958) and Donovan (1967) were both born today.

Our “Drink 4cast 4 2day” is for Skookum Jim Mason.

In 1896 Skookum Jim Mason, George Carmack and Dawson Charlie discovered gold in a tributary of the Klondike River in Canada, setting off the Klondike Gold Rush.
