Red Bull, Red Ryder & Black Bart

Whatta day!

Richard Wagner’s Parsifal premiered on this day in 1882. Big!

Today in 1946 Aloha Airlines began service from Honolulu International Airport. Bigger!!

On this day in 1745, the first recorded women’s cricket match took place near Guildford, England. Biggest??

Many, many birthdays;

–         Mozart (1791) and Mick Jagger (1943) were born this day. Oh, the tragedy of timing! They never collaborated and we are all diminished.

–         Actors Helen Mirren (1945), Jason Robards (1922) and Kevin Spacey (1959) share this birthday.

–         Those actors could have been in a play written by birthday boy George Bernard Shaw (1856). The film version could’ve been directed by another birthday boy; Stanley Kubrick (1928).

–         Aldous Huxley (1894) could have critiqued their film, Gracie Allen (1895) could have made jokes about it and Carl Jung (1875) could have told us what it all meant.

But today’s “Cocktail 4 2day” is for two special events that are related…sorta.

Jean Shepherd was born on this day in 1921. Mr. Shepherd wrote “A Christmas Story”, probably the most viewed movie about Christmas of our time. It featured our boy-hero Ralphie and his “Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle” trying to protect the world from Black Bart.

And…

Today in 1878 in California, the poet and American West outlaw calling himself “Black Bart” made his last clean getaway when he stole a safe box from a Wells Fargo stagecoach. The empty box was found later with a taunting note inside.

Well, I guess Ralphie couldn’t be everywhere.

Roger
