Why Celebrate Today? July 8, 2011

Whoa!

Big rain last night and I had to dodge fallen trees to get to the store this morning. However, this current unsettled weather should be out of here this afternoon and it looks to be a beautiful weekend ahead. The Blues and BBQ Fest at the Water Tower goes on all weekend in Louisville, as does the Berea Craft Fair, and the critically acclaimed Summerfest production of RICHARD III continues through Sunday in Lexington.

New Arrival

When I started in the wine business, about 135 years ago, red wine meant Bordeaux. It was the first red wine I knew. Now, of course, we have a planet-full of remarkable wines from which to choose. This is a very good thing. However, occasionally I run across a red wine that reminds me of why Bordeaux are special. Today, we drink so many varietal wines that express powerful, singular impressions. The Bordeaux style, for me, is about blending and complexity…certainly not bombast.

This week, we received a small amount of Crocker and Starr Bridesmaid Red 2006. It’s a Napa Valley blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It’s been aged 24+ months in French oak. I think you’ll find it rewarding. Oh…and the “Wine Enthusiast” rated it 92.

What should we celebrate today?

–          The first issue of the Wall Street Journal was published today in 1889.

–          In 1947, reports were broadcast that a UFO crash landed in Roswell, New Mexico. Visitors should at least call first.

Today is the birthday of John Smith Pemberton, the inventor of Coca-Cola (1831), Kevin Bacon (1958), bandleader Louis Jordan (1908), singer Billy Eckstine (1914) and inventor Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838).

Cocktail 4 2day

Today’s a big day for follies. In 1907, Florenz Ziegfeld staged his first “Follies” on the roof of the New York Theater in New York City. It’s also the birthday in 1830 of Frederick William Seward, two-time Assistant Secretary of State and purchaser of Alaska for the United States. Alaska was thus referred to as “Seward’s Folly”. Who’s laughin’ now Mr. Seward?

Our “Cocktail 4 2day” is;

Flatlander’s Folly

3 oz. Grapefruit Juice

1 oz. Yukon Jack

Pour the ingredients into an old fashioned glass half-filled with ice cubes. Stir and serve.

Cheers,

Roger.
