1784 – Zachary Taylor was born…to be the 12th U.S. President. Known as “Old Rough and Ready” Taylor spent much of his youth in Louisville and was interred here.
1849 – Writer Frances Hodgson Burnett was born…in “The Secret Garden” with “Little Lord Fauntleroy” and “A Little Princess”?
1864 – Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born…to be an post-impressionism artist in the Moulin-Rouge?
1868 – Composer and pianist Scott Joplin born…to be the “King of Ragtime” with “The Entertainer” and “The Maple Leaf Rag”.
1877 – Politician Alben W. Barkley born in Graves County, KY…to be a U.S. Senator from KY, and Harry S. Truman’s Vice President from 1949 to 1953. Barkley coined the phrase “Give ’em hell, Harry”, and Alben’s grandson came up with the abbreviation “Veep”. Lake Barkley in western Kentucky is named for him.
