It Must Have Been Pledge Week!

April 7, 2012

Today in 1927, public television was broadcast over distance for the first time. The broadcast was from Washington, DC to New York City, displaying the image of Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover. Compelling, must-see programming! Callers are standing by!!

You can’t make this stuff up.

Today in 1992 Republika Srpska announced its independence. Their first official act as an independent country was to ask to buy a vowel. (Actually I did make up that last part)

It’s World Health Day!

I feel pretty good about it.

It’s another fine jazz day.

-          Billie Holiday was born today in 1915.

-          Trumpet wizard Freddie Hubbard was born today in 1938.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific” opened today in 1949. We’ll let one of the big numbers from that show be our celebratory libation for today.

Bali Hai Cocktail

2 oz. Ron Diaz Light Rum

1 oz. Brandy

2 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

2 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice

1 tsp Orgeat Syrup

1 tsp Grenadine

Champagne

Shake ingredients (except champagne) with cracked ice and pour into a collins glass.

Fill with champagne.

“In your heart, you’ll hear it call you.”

Cheers!

Anything Special Happenin’ Today?

March 31, 2012

I thought I might take in a basketball game on the tube.

I will stay calm and root FOR my Kentucky team and not AGAINST the other Kentucky team.

Depending on how the game unfolds, I will not burn couches or slash my wrists.

I will not yell at the television or the referees, neither of which can hear me…I know this.

I will be happy on Monday knowing that a team from Kentucky is playing for the National Championship that evening.

I will be adult about all this. I will.

Of course I’ve noticed that my wife has covered the couches, soundproofed the television room, and removed all the sharp instruments from the house.

Other than that, it’s a pretty ordinary day.

I’ve got to get my mind off the game for a bit.

Today in 1943, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Oklahoma” opened on Broadway. Let’s celebrate that with an;

Oklahoma Rattler

1 ¼ oz. Durango Tequila

2-3 dashes Tabasco Sauce

Cover the bottom of a shot glass with Tabasco and fill the rest with tequila.

Let’s hope we’re singing “Oh, what a beautiful mornin’” tomorrow.

Cheers!
