I need to take a moment and applaud my friend Allen Dossey in Paducah. Mr. Dossey is the mind behind Purple Toad Winery. Last week Purple Toad won 12 medals at the 2012 Kentucky Derby Wine Competition including a gold medal for their newly released Moscato. That’s certainly impressive and worth celebrating. Congratulations, Allen! Now send some Moscato to the Barns!

1 ½ oz. Black Sambuca

1 ½ oz. Frangelico

1 scoop Vanilla Ice Cream

Milk

Combine all ingredients in a blender with ice.

Strain into a highball glass.

Frame your answer in the form of a question.

Today in 2004, seemingly eternal Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings of Salt Lake City, Utah finally bit the dust. This was after winning $2,520,700, the biggest game show winnings ever on television, so the dust didn’t taste too bad.

It was a big day for landmark record album releases. Today in 1982 Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, the best-selling album of all time was released. Three years earlier on this same date, “The Wall” by Pink Floyd was released. When I’m ready to release my first recording, I promise to do so on November 30^th.

There’s more to celebrate today.

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married today in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Today in 1886, the Folies Bergere staged its first revue. No, I was not there.

It’s Independence Day (when is it not?) in Barbados and Yemen.

We have a whole bunch of birthdays today.

-          It’s big day for writers. Gulliver’s friend Jonathan Swift (1667), mystery writer John Dickson Carr (1906), Huck Finn creator Mark Twain (1835), and “Glengary Glen Ross” playwright David Mamet (1947) were all born today. When I publish my first book, I promise to release it on November 30^th (I’m gonna be busy that day!).

-          Sir Winston Churchill was born today in 1874.

-          Artist Clyfford Still (1904) shares this birthday with gunsmith Oliver Winchester (1810).

-          Actors Mandy Patinkin (1952), Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. (1918), and Richard Crenna (1926) were all born today.

-          American Bandstand host Dick Clark (1929) and Kentucky’s own Joe B. Hall (1928) share this birthday as well.

Today in 1934, the steam locomotive “Flying Scotsman” became the first to officially exceed 100 miles per hour. Now, you’re probably asking why that’s such a big deal. Well, it’s because I found this killer cocktail to with the event!

Flying Scotsman Cocktail

1 oz. Scotch Whisky

1 oz. Sweet Vermouth

1 dash Angostura Bitters

¼ tsp Sugar Syrup

Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into a cocktail glass, and serve.

And remember to phrase your answers in the form of questions.
